Joseph Conrad was born in Poland and was a merchant mariner for many years. He did not learn English until his early 20s. After his years at sea, he settled in England and wrote fiction based on his experiences. In time he gained critical acclaim for the seriousness of his work. In “The Secret Sharer,” a ship’s captain newly appointed to his command, who wonders if he “should turn out faithful to that ideal conception of one’s own personality everyman set for himself secretly,” hauls a mysterious naked man aboard and hides him in his cabin. The man had been a crewmember on another ship and had killed someone. In the interplay of the two characters, Conrad weaves a chilling tale that touches on large themes of human destiny.
