Thorstein Veblen was an economist whose most famous work, “The Theory of the Leisure Class,” ranges far beyond the boundaries of his discipline. Veblen sees human history as essentially a war between our diligent nature (necessary for production of goods) and our materialistic nature (necessary for consumption of goods). Hand in hand with consumption comes the desire to flaunt one’s wealth. Many have read “The Theory of the Leisure Class” not as an academic treatise but as a satirical view of humanity as recorded from the vantage point of an alien visitor.
