In this piece, first delivered as a lecture in 1915 in Vienna, Freud applies his theories to the “mental distress” noncombatants experienced during the First World War. He cites two potent factors in this distress. The first is disillusionment and the second an altered attitude towards death. Towards the end of the lecture, he states a belief in the inevitability of war, and offers thoughts on how we humans must adapt ourselves to that reality.
